The Rock and Roll Academy “School Within A School” is an music program that emphasizes the musical, technological and social aspects of students’ creative processes within a multimedia environment.
The Rock and Roll Academy pilot program is thriving at the Telluride Mountain School in Telluride, Colorado. Head of School Ernie Patterson has been so pleased with the programs’ overall impact on his school that he nominated the program for a 2007 NAIS Leading Edge Award.

The Rock and Roll Academy School Within A School program is now in its seventh year at the Telluride Mountain School. Under the guidance of Mark Galbo and with the support of School Head Jim Loan the program is flourishing. Part of the excitement is the stylish new facility that was placed into the new Mountain School building in the fall of 2006. Recreating the original RRA space has proven to be a big hit with the students, faculty and parents alike and has had an immediate impact on the school culture. The new facility has also helped push ahead the Multimedia component of the RRA SWS program as the students have taken right to the new generation of Mac laptops and Imacs. Photos, video and Garage Band projects are plentiful and well integrated with the music that is happening onstage.
Telluride Mountain School delivers a program of challenging academics that promotes critical thinking, aesthetic expression and ethical behavior, while encompassing a commitment to community service, global citizenship and engagement with the natural environment. The school culture embraces independence, personal responsibility, compassion, curiosity and joy.
